My New Obsession

I’ve gone down a rabbit hole in the last few months. I blame Grace Burrowes and a random comment she made on Facebook about a new book coming out last year. This book, What the Devil Knows by C.S. Harris, was a casual mention in my feed upon its release. I read the synopsis and decided to give it a try. It sounded interesting. This was a mistake.

There are 16 of these things. About to be 17 in 2022.

Now, my TBR pile is pretty big. Two paper boxes full, plus the ones I buy from the authors I am dedicated to.

My current TBR pile. Ross and I like to play a game when I pick one up…guess what year this was published!

It took me a few months to order the first one Sebastian St. Cyr book. I might have requested it for my birthday in July. Why do you need all this useless timeline information, you might ask. Well, its because in 7 short months, I’m on number 11. I’ve even preemptively bought a few in the series so that I won’t have to wait when I get there.

Could I have been done with all of them by now? Sure. Absolutely. I could have burned through these things in a couple of months they’re that good. But I’m older now, and I realize the value of anticipation and reveling in the bliss of a well told story. To draw this ou, I’ve been strategically slotting other books in-between so that I wouldn’t read them all at once and not have anything to look forward to. See, i’m smarter now.

From the author’s website:

Sebastian St. Cyr Mysteries

Regency England. The age of Napoleon and Jane Austen, of Beau Brummel and Lord Byron. Ladies wear filmy dresses and dampen their petticoats, while gentlemen duel with pistols at dawn and agonize over the cut of a coat. Fortunes are won and lost at the turn of a card, a decades-old war has turned Europe into a ravaged battlefield, and in London, a child of six can still be hanged for stealing a handkerchief.

This is the world of Sebastian St. Cyr, Viscount Devlin. Heir to an earldom, disillusioned Army officer, latter day knight errant.

A master of disguises. Sebastian moves easily from the ballrooms of Mayfair to the rookeries of St. Giles, from the exclusive men’s clubs of St. James’s to the dangerous docks of the Thames.

Think Mr. Darcy with a James Bond edge…

One – I love Darcy. Pride and Prejudice is one of my all time favorite books. I’ve read it multiple times. I have three copies. Don’t judge. I have my reasons. One is the original copy I bought in my 20’s. The smell is amazing and the binding is perfect. I bought a second because the cover was beautiful-keep your snarky comments to yourself. I bought the third in graphic novel form…because I could.

My Austen books. There are two Sense & Sensibility because Ross bought one of those books that you fold the pages to make a picture, but I refuse to do that because…its a book. I don’t even dog-ear pages.

Two – I LOVE James Bond. In an almost uncool way. I’ve read all the books through Zero Minus Ten. I had to stop there because it was really really bad. And Let me tell you, I’ll read some horrible shit. I have all the Ian Flemings in the original paperback and the John Gardner books (which might be better than the Ian Fleming-but let’s keep that to ourselves).

As you can see, the Sebastian St. Cyr books are a perfect match to my tastes. This series is like cocaine to me.

Now I’m just wondering if they’re on audible and if I want to make that investment…

Ugh, they are. I have regrets for looking now. I guess all my extra audible credits will be going to C.S. Harris for the forseeable future. ARGH!

Reading Challenges 2022

Have you ever participated in a reading challenge? There are quite a few floating around out there. There’s always the annual How many books you read this year on Goodreads.com which I always set a number for myself. To be honest, i set it a bit low in the 60-70 books range, mostly because I set it high one year and a bunch of shit happened during that year. I fell far short and felt like an utter failure for a completely made up and self-imposed challenge.

I get that that’s crazy.

Anyway, I’ve seen a few new ones pop up in some of my reading groups.

Back to the Classics – This one seems fun and comes with a prize. A year-long challenge in which participants are encouraged to finally read the classics they’ve always meant to read — or just recently discovered.

There are a bunch of great categories and I would be totally down for this one, except the nonfiction classic. I can’t. I can barely tolerate nonfiction now, let alone some antiquated bullshit some white dude was spewing 50+ years ago.

Read Around the World Challenge – Are you ready to go on an unforgettable journey from the comfort of your favorite reading chair? Throughout this year-long challenge, we’ll be your travel guides, and we’ve put together comprehensive reading lists full of great books for each geographic monthly reading prompt!

This one comes with a grid. I love a grid.

Plus, there are helpful links for each month to help you get started. Actually, I might put this on my list of challenges to consider. Even if I have already missed January.

The Clock Reading Challenge – The goal: to read 12 books, each with a number from 1 to 12 in the title.

This one also comes with a grid. I can’t tell you how excited I am about the grids.

This seems too taxing for me. And honestly, I have too many books sitting on my TBR pile to buy more for this particular challenge. Wait…did I just say that? Sorry, I think I might have had a brain fog or something. I couldn’t possibly said, I wouldn’t buy more books.

If you’re looking for more fun, themed reading challenges, there are a whole mess of them over at girlxoxo.com on the 2022 Master List of Reading Challenges

If you’re tired of goodreads.com or need your information displayed digitally, check out TheStoryGraph.com. They also have an entire page of reading challenges to choose from.

As an aside, StoryGraph is kinda neat. You can upload your goodreads information but it doesn’t sync so you either have to maintain both or make the switch. I’m personally too invested in goodreads with my author site that I can’t really use both or make the switch. However, StoryGraph does give you fun visual stats like this:

There are plenty of reading challenges out there for every flavor of reading. Jump in and have fun!

Infinite Azure – Snippet

Coming April 2022

Coming April 2022

“Diana? Wasn’t it?” Brittany asked, her hair still standing on end as she followed Ev into the house with a bright smile on her face.

“Yes,” Diana replied, stepping back and away from the potent magic still vibrating at a ridiculously high frequency off of Brittany and the hawk perched on her shoulder.

“You hungry? I’m always starving,” she said waving at Diana to follow her. Diana glanced at me with a question arching her dark brow.

Ev chuckled as he followed two steps behind Brittany, “You eat more than me,” he laughed.

“Yeah, well, I used a lot of magic and I could go for a burger, or a pizza, definitely some fries and a milkshake. Is there a place that sells all of those things AND delivers?” Her words came out fast as she moved from the living room to the den, headed to the kitchen.

“I will get you whatever you want,” Ev said smiling, “but I know where there’s a secret stash of donuts until it all gets here.”

“Ooohh, donuts,” Brittany cooed as she grinned over her shoulder at Ev.

“Come on,” I said, stepping out of the ring of Patrick’s embrace and motioned to Diana.

We followed them into the kitchen, Diana a steady pace behind me, and Patrick behind her. I strode into the kitchen and circled the island, taking a seat at the breakfast bar. Ev was in the pantry moving items around as Brittany hopped and jumped to see over his shoulder.

“Why are you hiding donuts back there?” Brittany squealed as he brought the box down and handed it to her.

“So you won’t eat them. These are for emergencies only,” he snorted. She ripped open the box and tore into the Entenmann’s chocolate-covered donuts. He pulled out his phone and hit a button in his contacts. “Hey, Beth,” he said, “yeah, I need to place an order. You ready?” he asked with a grin. We ordered from Alberta’s a lot. “Okay, we need five firefighters, five the works pies, five meats, three veggie, four baskets of fries—”

“Meatball sub,” Brittany loud-whispered.

“And a meatball sub,” Ev said, shaking his head. “Can I add two Sauer’s Kraut Pizzas?”

Diana stopped in the doorway, staring out the wall of windows where Booker sat in a deck chair, chatting with the dragon lying circled around the pool. Booker threw his head back laughed at something the dragon said. He didn’t seem eager to leave, and Booker didn’t seem threatened. After the momentary pause, Diana entered the kitchen and sat down beside me as the kitchen and house began to fill up as everyone returned from the clusterfuck of Easton, and sequestering in the house for safety.

Best Show on TV

I don’t know if any of you have seen this but I’ve been cackling all week.

First, I love Retta. She’s amazing and I want to be her best friend but not in a weird way. She’s hilarious. I need a show that is completely Retta going around and viewing bat shit crazy houses. I could care less about the reno but watching her react as any of us would react to some of these houses, is the funniest shit I’ve seen in a while.

Second, I love home disasters and the length of time it took them to figure out that the glitter house (yep, you read that right. . .glitter) was a former brothel was too long and amazing to watch. My concern is the speed at which I understood what that house was used for. . . because it was really quickly, like before the identified cameras in every room.

Third, the Northeast semifinal round did not bring the ugly like the prior two rounds. I KNOW the north east has way more ugly houses than that. Where were you?

Fourth, the west division was ugly but not that bad. Thank you jungle house for living up to my expectations of what kind of ridiculous shit people will put in their houses. Also, dated doesn’t mean ugly. It just means dated. Carpet around the base of a kitchen island . . . that’s something else entirely.

I need people to stop buying things that are not meant for housing and living in them like they’re houses. Do no buy a full-fledged funeral home and think you can convert it. Don’t buy a day care and think it’ll be easy to renovate, because it won’t. If you bought, what used to be a bank, because of the driveway, that just makes you dumb. Don’t buy a house that used to be a barn and then be surprised when it’s a hundred degrees in there, the structure was never built for house HVAC properly.

The prize for this show is $150K renovation by Alison Victoria. You may know her from Windy City Rehab. She’s the scary one who likes to paint a lot of things black for dramatic effect. The point here is, that $150K isn’t going to change the structure of your house. If you bought a house shaped like a pyramid and has windows that look like its grinning at you from the street, no amount of money is going to fix that. You’re still going to have weird ass angles in your house and tiny windows. If you bought a house made of cinderblocks and corrugated metal and no insulation, that isn’t going to change. Knock that shit down and start again. That’s your only option.

So, what have we learned?

  1. That people buy houses for stupid reasons – like the driveway…
  2. That HGTV has made everyone think they can rehab an entire house and it’ll be just fine. Here’s a hint- it won’t. You don’t know what you’re doing.
  3. People will still overpay for stupid houses. If you think half a million dollars is a low ball offer for a house that has a Poseidon Fountain out front, your idea and my idea of low ball are VERY different.
  4. Never buy a house at a sheriff’s sale. That’s how you end up with a glitter encrusted former brothel
  5. If you’re in a relationship and you buy a house without your partner’s consent or input, you should expect divorce papers and don’t let the door hit you in the ass on your way out.
  6. $150K isn’t going to be enough to fix some of these houses

Deliveries that Will Never Come

My treadmill still hasn’t arrived yet. At this point, this situation is bordering on ridiculous and the FedEx drivers are just mocking me.

I called FedEx a few days ago and they “opened a case” which amounted to them doing nothing and telling me that if it doesn’t show up by 12/22 that I should file a lost package or some such shit.

Why can’t you tell me where my damned package is and when it’s going to show up. You’ve literally had it in your possession and in Columbus for 10 days.

Holiday Nonsense

Let’s catch up.

I did not make my Nanowrimo goal. Not even close.

However, I take comfort in the fact that I was working on my edits for Infinite Azure from my editor for the last two weeks. Actually, I’m still working on them.

Now that its December, my baking is in full swing. I have made a shit ton of cookies and a couple of fruit cakes. Most of that went pretty well, that is, until I got to the marshmallows.

I’ve made marshmallows a few times now and they always came out great. My plan was to layer caramel over them and then cover them in chocolate and make marshmallow pops. The marshmallows went fine. Even making the caramel turned out great. My problems began in the process of construction. There’s a reason I don’t work with tempered chocolate. That shit never comes out right for me.

  1. I forgot to spray the plastic wrap so the bottom of the marshmallow sheet is now stuck to the plastic lining the pan. I gave up half way through for many reasons
    • it was taking too long to separate the marshmallow from the plastic wrap because that shit is sticky.
    • I didn’t buy nearly enough chocolate for the whole pan of marshmallows.
  2. I made a caramel sauce, thinking it would harden in the freezer. It did not, which means that the plastic wrap I sprayed and layed over it stuck to it.
  3. The sticks are ripping the marshmallow because of the sheer weight of them.
  4. I forgot to spray the rack I placed the pops on after dipping them in chocolate.
    • I realize now that I should have placed them on wax paper because the wet chocolate seeped through the grid in the rack and solidified it to the rack as it dried.

Look at these nightmarish things! They look fine on one side, except for those two at the top left, that was the last of the chocolate. Turn them over and there’s a definite cracked grid pattern.

I think, next time, I’ll go smaller and just make them individual marshmallows. Also, wax paper. I’m going to put them on wax paper.

Ross said they tasted great (even though he doesn’t like marshmallows). So, I guess that’s something.

I basically have all my christmas shopping done, because I’m that person that starts in August. Now, I’m stressed out because I don’t have anything to do and I feel like I’m forgetting something.

I might go buy some things for myself to put in my stocking. Besides, no one knows what I like better than me . . . right?

I bought myself a treadmill. Let’s be real, here. I wasn’t willing to spend a bunch of money on it because the odds of me sticking with it and using it regularly are questionable at best. I am nothing if not self-aware.

However, I’ve been waiting for this shit to show up for days. It’s like they keep putting it on the truck, driving by my house (waving), and then driving away.

Seriously? At this point, i’m just pissed.

This is getting ridiculous now.

Give me my fucking treadmill, FedEX!

Selena+

Let’s talk about Selena+Chef for a moment.

Its not a great show. Its not a bad show. Its just a lovely show. Ross and I watch it when we have nothing going on and need a little something to tide us over between episodes of Young Justice or whatever else we’re binging through at the moment.

Selena Gomez started this during lockdown, looking for something to do and a way to give back which is commendable. Listen, she gives money to charities with each episode-chef’s choice-and found a way to add a revenue stream from her house when everything else was shut down. Way to go, Selena!

When we first started watching this, I knew who Selena Gomez was, but I didn’t listen to her music or watch anything she was in before. After watching her though, I would say I am a fan. Not of her songs or her shows but just of her. Throughout the course of the three seasons, I’ve watched her almost cut off her finger. . .multiple times; catch parchment paper on fine; start a grease fire; blend without the lid; break a jar of olives by pressing too hard; burn some shit. There are probably more things that I’m forgetting but those are the highlights of the things I’ve watched her mess up. But we’ve all done those things.

I’ve also watched her learn what Mise en Place means-which had been said and explained to her many times over the course of the first season. She got it by season two.

I watched her learn how to use a knife. There were a few times I was scared for her fingers but over the episodes, she learned how to use a knife properly and which knives to use.

I’ve watched her learn and become more comfortable in the kitchen and with herself in the kitchen.

To be honest, I’m kinda proud of Selena.

Then there’s Raquel.

Raquel is her. . .friend? Part of her entourage? Honestly, I don’t know. She lives in Selena’s house, I don’t know that she has a job other than being Selena Gomez’s friend. She feels the need to be present for every show. Say something all-the-fucking-time. And generally include herself in the interview process which just seems weird. I find her incredibly annoying. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve screamed, “Shut up, Raquel!” the the TV. Is there a place I can write an angry letter to get Raquel removed? All her other friends are fine. Raquel just really gets under my skin.

Anyway, I’m excited for season four. You can watch Selena+Chef on HBOMax.

There’s A Mouse In The House

This week was a pretty exciting week and not because of some great milestone or a windfall. Nope, i’m talking strictly about the events of the week being exciting.

On Tuesday, I got up for work and went about my normal routine of getting ready at the butt-ass-crack-of-dawn to be at my office by 7:30am. I went into my office to get a sweater . . . cause that’s where I keep my sweaters. Don’t ask.

I turn on the light.

I get my sweater and put it on.

I notice that the cat is pacing in front of the window and that the pillow is on the register. I step forward to remove the pillow, cause-you know, I don’t want to start a fire. Considering that my house is always ridiculously cold, I realize this is an idiotic fear, but decades of indoctrination by my parents about the dangers of “putting things over registers” has done it’s job.

I turn to leave the office but the cat cries out. Percy never makes a noise unless he’s unhappy. Oliver, on the other hand, screams at me on the regular to give him a treat. It only works about 30% of the time.

I ask him what’s wrong . . . like he’s going to answer. Listen, if you don’t talk to you’re pets like they’re real human beings, you might be an inhuman monster. Just saying.

It’s at this point that I notice a large thing on top of the curtain rod. In my head, its a crumpled leaf (because I don’t have my glasses on and can’t see shit) and the question keeps running through my head, how did a leaf get up there?

I take a few steps closer and realize, no-it is not a leaf. It is, in fact, a mouse. That’s when I whisper-shout, “There’s a mouse. Get up! Get up! We have a mouse.”

For a moment, all the fun little cinderella mice, despereaux, and all the other fun loving mice from childrens stories ran through my head and I felt guilty for disturbing it. Then i thought about it’s gross little fingered hands and it running all over my house and mentally said, fuck it.

Ross came in and said, “oohh.” I shit you not.

We come up with a plan. I suggest a bucket and we get to work. Ross came back from the garage with a broom, a bucket, and work gloves. He’d learned his lesson from the last encounter he had with a mouse at work where he wore only surgical gloves. Needless to say, the mouse bit him. There were so many jokes. For a straight week, I called him mouse man and waited for him to transform into a mouse inspired superhero. It never happened to my ever present disappointment.

Here’s where the chase began. Did we shut the office door to make sure the mouse could not get out . . . no. No, we did not. However, that becomes an irrelevant fact.

Ross knocked it off the curtain rod with the broom but didn’t manage to catch it in the bucket. The cat, however, thought this was great fun. He chased that damned mouse all over the office and we followed the cat. At some point, Scarlett woke up and came into the office.

“What are you guys doing?” she asked.

I hesitated a moment because I didn’t want to scare her about the mouse. Ross didn’t seem to care and said, “There’s a mouse in mommy’s office.”

My daughter proceded to plop her butt on the loveseat in my office and cheer on the cat.

We chased him into the closet, then behind the file cabinet, then behind the router. And by “we”, i mean the cat. We just followed the cat. It was behing the router, cornered between the wall, the router, and the cat that ross finally got the bucket over him. He slipped a cookie sheet under the bucket and carried the mouse outside into the front yard . . . in his boxer briefs. LOL.

Be free little mouse but beware, the next time-I’ll let the cat have you. I imagine that to be a horrible, painful, and frightening death. Percy’s never caught a mouse before. I imagine quite a bit of torture (aka playing) before death finally comes.
