The Batman

Ross and I finally watched The Batman this weekend and I have thoughts.

All of the architecture looks like a combination of French Medieval and Hogwarts. No American city looks/feels like that. Seriously, Nothing here is older than like 300 years old. There’s also a part of me that’s pissed that they filmed this in the UK. Gotham is supposed to be a shithole. I mean, how many places have that many open vats of acid for people to fall into anyway?

How many times do you think that Matt Reeves watched Se7en before making this movie? It had to be a bunch because we were like 45 minutes in and all I could think was “WHAT’S IN THE BOX?” And OMG, that’s the first thing that comes up in my google search when I put in What’s. Google autopopulated the rest. This is AMAZING. I’m not the only one who saw it.

At some point, Batman was indeed fighting a bunch of the Riddler’s goons.

I just want to point out the fact that Batman was, in deed, fighting a goon squad which we all know is the cornerstone to any BTAS episode.

This movie was WAAAAAAY too long. Once they caught the riddler, we paused the movie and there was still 45 minutes left. FORTY FIVE MINUTES! So the Riddler could destroy the city? Meanwhile, no one thought to think twice about the damage to all those acid vats would do to the city.

Robert Pattinson‘s voice is not really deep enough to be Batman or to be scary. I’m just putting this out there. His normal voice does not strike fear.

I love the casual drop of Bludhaven. Thanks Cat Woman for taking off to Gotham’s sister city. There aren’t enough mentions of Nightwings home base. They’re always dashing off to Metropolis. Nope, Bludhaven is where its at.

There wasn’t enough grappling hook in this movie. Plus, it ended up happening all at the end. come on! The grappling hook it Batman’s signature. Ross and I have a game we play whenever we watch any Batman show or movies where we just shout out GRAPPLING HOOK whenever he uses one. If this was a drinking game, we’d be under the table for most of them. This one, only a few shouts and only at the end. I was disappointed

Was this a horror film??? I wonder how old those people who claimed this was a horror film are because us Gen X’ers lived through a whole period of movies like this. We got our feet wet and spent the entire 90’s in a dark and dingy fog thanks to films like Se7en, Fight Club, and Panic Room. Thanks David Fincher. This serial killer induced haze of dingy rooms, dark cinematography, and over the top murder set ups.

All of these comments seem like i didn’t like it. That’s not true at all. It was . . . fine. It was better than some other Batman movies. I do prefer the grittier, darker Batman as compared to the campy cartoonish style Batman from Joel Schumacher. I think of all the Batman movies since the original Michael Keaton 1989 version, I would put The Batman as a solid second place, behind The Dark Knight. No one can argue with Heath Ledger as the Joker. You just can’t.

DC Rabbit Hole

I have gone down a rabbit hole. When we signed up for HBOMax at the beginning of 2021 . . . I think-we had HBOgo before that-I uncovered a whole world of DC media. Yes, of course the movies were in there but those all suck. God, why can’t DC get that shit right? However, the wealth of content is actully in the animated stuff. There’s so much there and it’s really good.

First, Ross and I rewatched all of Batman the Animated Series. It holds up. I will to this day argue that the BEST Batman/Bruce Wayne is Kevin Conroy. Change my mind. Top tip, you won’t.

Then we moved onto the Justice League and Justice League Unlimited. There are several things I learned from this. Hawkgirl is basically DC’s version of the Hulk. There were many times while watching this that Ross or myself would call out, “Hawkgirl smash”. This was fun, like a drinking game only with tired, grown-ass-adults with nothing better to do. We also are still doing that everytime Batman uses his grappling hook. Calling this out each time is theraputic for some reason. I also find it really cute when Superman acts like he’s in charge. We all know he isn’t.

Also, I just find the fact that Batman is a father delightful. Justified that Batman/Bruce Wayne is the WORST parent on the face of the planet and makes extremely questionable parenting decisions, like taking children out to fight crime (for one). This did, in fact, get one of the Robin’s killed. So, let’s keep that in mind but watching him try to be a regular parent is hilarious.

I can’t watch this enough. This is just plain hilarious. This will never stop being funny.

We should move on to one of my favorite DC characters. No, its not Wonder Woman. I personally find WW a bit one dementional like Superman. No, my favorite is not a hero (although Batman and Damian Wayne, really ride that hero/villain line). Of course my favorite is a villain. I LOVE and I mean in an obcessive kinda way, Harley Quinn. I own a Harley Quinn blazer for fuck’s sake. Its amazing. I wear it to work. I give zero fucks about fangirling hard at work. I’m also glad that DC realized the wonderful asset they had in Harley Quinn and Margot Robbie. That character might be the only reason people are still watching Suicide Squad. Again, prove me wrong.

Harley Quinn series is amazing. The Bane jokes alone are worth the watch.

The weird, long forgotten villains like Condiment King (cause why was this ever a thing), Kite Man (yes, this is an actual villain in DC), and Queen of Fables (so weird that someone not only thought this one up but that it was actually a thing) make appearances. God, no wonder they keep using Darkseid. Most of DC’s villains are just so fucking dumb.

If you haven’t watched Batman and Harley Quinn, please do so. I have never cackled so hard as when Harley farted in the Batmobile. OMG, I wanted to die my stomach hurt so much. I’ve plopped the trailer in here for your enjoyment.

We couldn’t watch Batman Beyond. I just couldn’t deal with it. Although, old and craggly Bruce Wayne was a pleasure. Even in his dotage, Bruce Wayne is a complete and utter asshat. I love it.

We’re currently working our way through The Batman. it was on cartoon network a while ago and I can’t figure out why everyone was drawn with GIGANTIC finger tips and faces that look like they’ve been punched in. Now, I don’t even refer to it by name. I just ask, are we watching Punchy Faced Batman? Also, why is the Joker barefoot? WHY? I’ve included the intro.

Ross keeps making fun of me that I’ve disappeared down this rabbit hole. I’ll be honest with you, considering my last post and the shit shows I deal with everyday, I can’t deal with heavy drama at the moment. I like knowing that Batman is always going to kickass and that the bad guys will get what’s coming to them. Superhero cartoons make me happy at the moment. I’m sure I’ll get tired of it but right now, its just hitting the spot.

Suicide Squad

Ross and I just got finished watching Suicide Squad. What the hell was that? No, seriously, what the hell was that? I just don’t understand why Marvel movies are so good and DC movies are so bad. I mean, I do. DC movies always have too many characters, too much shit going on, and zero plot and/or character development. We got through an hour and NOTHING had happened yet. I’m so confused about what the point of the Joker even was. Also, why did Jared Leto get second billing? He was in it for like 15 minutes and not even all together.

However, I am in love with the fact that Margot Robbie clearly binged on Batman the Animated Series to watch Harley Quinn and pick up the mannerisms and, let’s face it, the crazy. She was clearly the highlight.

Also, Ben Affleck makes some cameos as Batman. I personally think that Ben Affleck is a horrible actor. He should really just stick to doing things behind the camera. He’s a phenomenal director, screen writer, and producer. The issue with his performance as Batman is that it wasn’t even his fault. I can’t even blame Batffleck for the horribleness of Batman vs Superman or in Suicide Squad. The movies themselves were horrible.

I have huge expectations for Wonder Woman.

I expect that not only that it follow the Captain America model but that it will actually be good. Coming from DC, though, I can’t be sure. And that, makes me sad.
