GDPR…

I missed Wednesday. It was a combination of busy – cause life happens – and poor planning. Yep, I said it. I didn’t plan shit ahead of time.

This week, I’m working on the GDPR compliance issues for my website and newsletter.

Let’s start with this, I’m not a tech person. There’s a reason my website is on WordPress. It’s because:

1. I’m not successful enough to pay someone actual money to build and maintain an actual website.

2. This was supposed to be easier to house for yourself for those non-techy people. I am one of those people, btw.

WRONG!!!!

I spent three hours yesterday trying to get my website in compliance with the new GDPR standards. I didn’t even make it to my newsletter yet. That’s a project for this weekend.

What is GDPR, you might ask?

“The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) (EU) 2016/679 is a regulation in EU law on data protection and privacy for all individuals within the European Union. It addresses the export of personal data outside the EU. The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is a legal framework that sets guidelines for the collection and processing of personal information of individuals within the European Union (EU).”

Thanks to the google machine for producing this handy dandy definition and explanation.

What this means for me is that I have to alert people to the fact that my website uses cookies. I don’t know what the fuck cookies are used for, or what they do, but it does and I have to let people know.

I still have to get people to re-certify that they want to receive my newsletter. It was suggested to me that I should segment my lists, to only send the re-certification to only those people in the EU and Switzerland. It sounded easy but as I’ve discovered, nothing is ever easy. The very helpful screen shots on Mailchimp show and option choice that doesn’t exist when I go in there. Here’s my very grown up decision regarding this issue. This shit won’t work, so everyone is getting the re-certification email. If you don’t open it, then I’m taking you off my list. See, very grown up.

Once I figure out how the forms on Mailchimp work, I’ll be sending that out. Don’t hold your breath for that email in the next several days. The website issues fried my brain and my wallet, soooooooo……..

It’s going to be a minute.
