GDPR…

I missed Wednesday. It was a combination of busy – cause life happens – and poor planning. Yep, I said it. I didn’t plan shit ahead of time.

This week, I’m working on the GDPR compliance issues for my website and newsletter.

Let’s start with this, I’m not a tech person. There’s a reason my website is on WordPress. It’s because:

1. I’m not successful enough to pay someone actual money to build and maintain an actual website.

2. This was supposed to be easier to house for yourself for those non-techy people. I am one of those people, btw.

WRONG!!!!

I spent three hours yesterday trying to get my website in compliance with the new GDPR standards. I didn’t even make it to my newsletter yet. That’s a project for this weekend.

What is GDPR, you might ask?

“The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) (EU) 2016/679 is a regulation in EU law on data protection and privacy for all individuals within the European Union. It addresses the export of personal data outside the EU. The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is a legal framework that sets guidelines for the collection and processing of personal information of individuals within the European Union (EU).”

Thanks to the google machine for producing this handy dandy definition and explanation.

What this means for me is that I have to alert people to the fact that my website uses cookies. I don’t know what the fuck cookies are used for, or what they do, but it does and I have to let people know.

I still have to get people to re-certify that they want to receive my newsletter. It was suggested to me that I should segment my lists, to only send the re-certification to only those people in the EU and Switzerland. It sounded easy but as I’ve discovered, nothing is ever easy. The very helpful screen shots on Mailchimp show and option choice that doesn’t exist when I go in there. Here’s my very grown up decision regarding this issue. This shit won’t work, so everyone is getting the re-certification email. If you don’t open it, then I’m taking you off my list. See, very grown up.

Once I figure out how the forms on Mailchimp work, I’ll be sending that out. Don’t hold your breath for that email in the next several days. The website issues fried my brain and my wallet, soooooooo……..

It’s going to be a minute.

Photoshop Fail

I’ve never used Photoshop and never had to before. Probably a failure in my tech knowledge, since this is a pretty standard program for about anyone on the face of the planet to use. However, I’ve never had to before. I’d just like to throw that out there in my defense.

Last week, I was trying to fix my website. I hadn’t chosen a lot of the templates because I don’t have the pictures to add and then because of the Photoshop knowledge (or lack there of). I finally just bit the bullet and tried something new. I think it looks pretty good but there are still a few things I need to fix. First and foremost, I needed to move my name and tag over the picture at the header because I don’t particularly like it where it is right now.

Yeah, no. That’s not happening anytime soon.

I opened Photoshop and plopped the picture in there. Everyone I talked to said Photoshop was super easy. I thought I wouldn’t have that much trouble. Ummm, that is incorrect.

I have no idea what the fuck any of those icons mean or do. I started pushing buttons, cause that’s what I do. Instructions? Who needs instructions? Not me. Well, that was clearly a mistake. Some “layering” started to happen and I have no idea what that means. I mean, I think I know what that means but I can’t figure out how it works or how to make it look like what I want. I was about 15 minutes in before I realized I was in over my head. Yes, it did take me that long. I’d held out hope that some epiphany would strike me and everything would fall into place. It didn’t.

I asked Ross to bring me home an instruction manual for Photoshop. Yep. I’m going to read the instructions.
